BC Rugby is pleased to formally announce that the Provincial Regional Championships (PRCs) has a new home for 2019, the Gerald McGavin Rugby Centre at UBC. Taking place over the Canada Day long weekend from June 29th to July 1st , the Championship draws in excess of 1,000 young rugby players from across the Province.
The PRCs is one of the most anticipated weekends in the rugby calendar in British Columbia, with teams of U14 to U18 athletes representing regions across the Province vying for championship glory. Drawing on players from Campbell River to Nelson and everywhere in between, the event is a fantastic celebration of age-grade rugby talent. The move to UBC for the 2019 tournament will give teams greater access to a range of accommodation and facilities right on their doorstep.
Furthermore, the PRCs is used as a key tool in process of identification and selection of rising stars to represent BC in tournaments across the country later this summer. This process begins in the Spring with open ID Sessions held across the Province. “The talent identification process is designed to uncover and develop athletes that have the potential to play Provincial and National level rugby,” explains Tony LaCarte, Head of Rugby Growth and Development at BC Rugby. “We want to provide them with the opportunity to express themselves on and off the field in front of Provincial and Regional Coaches.”
The PRCs play a pivotal role in the selection process, providing coaches with the chance to watch players in action at a level higher than local club or school rugby. With so much on the line, the on-field action at the PRCs is always high quality, with players striving for both silverware and selection.
Each summer, approximately three hundred female and male rugby players represent BC in Western Canada and National Championships, as well as fixtures against touring sides from Europe and the US. For many of the athletes, this is the first step towards a spot on Canadian National Junior programs and beyond. Indeed, a number of current Men’s and Women’s National XVs players can count a spell on the BC Provincial Representative Teams as a key stepping stone to their place on the international stage.
