Island athletes in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics had a successful weekend on Vancouver Island with local Saanich club, Falcon Gymnastics hosting the 37th annual Garden City Invitational over the Victoria Day long weekend. The meet saw over 500 young athletes from ages 6 to 18 compete at the Pearkes Recreation Center in Saanich. Competing clubs from the Island joined with clubs from the Lower Mainland, and the rest of the province along with guests from Port Angeles Washington, Edmonton and Calgary. Over 2000 people attended the 3 day event.
Wainwright Gymnastics Club from Wainwright, Alberta brought 5 athletes for a long weekend in Victoria to compete and sightsee at the Butchart Gardens, Inner Harbour and the Provincial Legislature. Mountain Shadows Gymnastics Club from Okotoks, Alberta brought 10 athletes and also enjoyed some sightseeing and sunshine this past weekend.
The Garden City Invitational wraps up the end of the annual competitive season for the Falcon gymnasts who compete in a circuit of 5 or more meets each year across the province. Island clubs have continued to perform well in the provincial competitive circuit where athletes from Falcon Gymnastics, Nanaimo Gymnastics, Lion’s Pride Gymnastics Academy, Wayland Sports Nanaimo, Chimo Gymnastics and Inspire Sports Victoria all won Provincial All Around Individual Championships.
Competitions were offered from the Junior Olympic 2 to 8 divisions along with a Sunday showcase of Interclub and Performance Plus gymnasts. Athletes competed in the four events of uneven bars, balance beam, vault and floor exercise. This year also saw team competitions from the JO3 to JO7 divisions with all the top spots going to Vancouver Island based teams with top scores out of a possible 120 points.
