March 1, 2020. Colwood, BC (ISN) – The Castaway Wanderers continued their winning ways, scoring early and scoring often as they defeated Westshore RFC 45-24 at Juan de Fuca Field Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Castaway Wanderers keep the pressure on their opponents above and below in the standings, posting their seventh consecutive win in as many games. With the win, the tri-colors hold onto fifth place in the BC Rugby Union season standings, with only three points separating fifth and third place in the standings.
James Pitblado and Luke Bradley would put their Castaway Wanderers team out in front 12-0 to open the game before Westshore’s Jade Billington would dot the ball down to make the margin a respectable 12-5 score. Teams would trade scoring in the latter part of the first half with CW’s Liam Chisholm adding to his team’s score to make it 19-5 before Westshore would reply with a try by Taylor McGuire. The Castaway Wanderers would go into the half up 24-12 after scoring a final try in closing the first fourty minutes of play.
The Castaway Wanderers would control much of the second half of play. Too many errors in ball handling, defensive line gaps and penalties would result in the visiting side outscoring their host three trys to two. CW’s James Hammond would score first to open the second half, and David Devillers would score a pair of trys to round out the Castaway Wanderer scoring.
In a “never say die” effort by Westshore RFC would result in two late, gritty trys by Sipili Molia and Paul-Henri van Thiel to make the score 45-24 in a too little to late effort as Castaway Wanderers would keep their winning streak alive at seven wins in a row with the victory.
As the regular season winds down, the Castaway Wanderers, with three games remaining, will take on Meraloma March 14th, while Westshore RFC will not see action until March 24th, also against Meraloma.
