Camosun College is proud to congratulate fifth-year Chargers Women’s Volleyball setter and Bachelor of Sport and Fitness Leadership student, Katie Wayling, on receiving the prestigious President’s Cup for her outstanding academic and athletic achievements over the 2019-20 season.
Katie is one of many outstanding Camosun Chargers student-athletes to be recognized for their achievements this past season.
Katie Wayling arrived at the college as a second-year student-athlete in 2016-17, and has since accumulated an impressive list of awards and accolades. In 2017, Katie helped the Chargers Women’s Volleyball program reach its’ highest achievement to date, as they finished as the silver medalists on home court at the 2017 Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) National Championships, hosted by Camosun College. Last season, Katie earned the CCAA National Scholar Athlete award and the PACWEST Academic Excellence award, and was named a CCAA Athlete of the Week and PACWEST Athlete of the Week.
The 2019-20 season proved to be another stellar year for Katie, as the 5’6” Castlegar resident added a second PACWEST Academic Excellence award to her registry of achievements, as well as a PACWEST Second Team All-Star. Katie also earned one of the CCAA’s top awards recognizing excellence in both academics and athletics – the distinguished CCAA Academic All-Canadian. Katie led the Chargers to compete at its third CCAA National Championship, where the team made a Top Five national finish for 2020 – all, while maintaining one of the highest GPA’s among her fellow Camosun student-athletes.
“Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we’re unable to host an event to celebrate another great year for the Chargers,” says Sherri Bell, President of Camosun College. “Congratulations to student-athlete Katie Wayling on being the recipient of the President’s Cup. Katie’s leadership on and off the volleyball court will prepare Katie well in all her future endeavors.”
Katie has been a volunteer with the I Am Strong program that strives to empower young girls through movement and conversation. Over the past two years, she has visited many local elementary schools to educate youth on the benefits of journaling, yoga, exercise, and play. She has also been a coach and the program coordinator for a number of youth summer volleyball programs and clinics.
“I am truly honoured to receive this award,” says Katie. “This recognition further ignites my drive to seek out any opportunity to share my love for health and wellness in our community.”
The Derek Twomey Scholarship for Sport was awarded to third-year Chargers Men’s Volleyball left side hitter, Brendan Folkerts (Winnipeg, MB), for his unparalleled work ethic, drive to win and profound sense of what it means to be part of a team. Brendan’s exuberant attitude and athletic ability over the season, also led him to earn a PACWEST Athlete of the Week and PACWEST Championship Player of the Game.
Brendan was among 17 Chargers student-athletes who were recognized for their outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments at the provincial and national levels over the 2019-20 season. In addition, Chargers Women’s Volleyball Head Coach, Brent Hall, earned the coveted PACWEST Coach of the Year award for his leadership and coaching excellence for the second consecutive year!
