Marilyn Pomfret’s remarkable contributions to women in university sport have landed her a spot in the Canada West Hall of Fame
Pomfret spent 11 years as coach of UBC’s women’s volleyball team, guiding the program to conference titles in 1965, 1973 and 1974, and back-to-back CIAU gold medals in 1973 and 1974.
While her coaching accomplishments were impressive, her greatest achievements came as an administrator, helping organize women’s university sport.
In 1969, Pomfret founded the Canadian Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Union. She was key in launching women’s national championships in 1970-71.
From 1975 until 1986, Pomfret served on the Board of Directors of Canada West and was its president from 1983 until her retirement in 1986.
