April 30, 2022 Victoria, BC ( ISN )  –  Canada Sevens women’s side kicked off the 2022 Langford Sevens with a solid 19-10 win over Spain in Saturday pool play

Although many of the faces have changed since pre-CoVid, their play still shows the spark of old on the pitch. Canada looking to improve their eight-place standing in the six tournament 2022 Women’s HSBC Rugby Sevens race. Langford, the fifth stop in the 2022 series, has normally be a favourable stop for the home side.

Spain, nipping at the heels of Canada in a ninth-place position, looked to spoil the Canadian women’s return to rugby at Starlight Stadium after a 3-year hiatus.

Spain would hold their own for much of the first half, however Canada would break the ice with a try by Keyara Wardley at the four-minute mark of the opening half.  That try would mark the first of 2 tries by Wardley in the game.  Spain, not to be denied, would battle back with a try by Maria Calvo to narrow Canada’s lead going into the half up 7-5.

The Spaniards would take the lead early in the 2nd frame with a sideline jaunt by Lea Ducher to advance the score in their favour 10-5.

Canada would take over the half and the scoreboard on a mid-field run by Bianca Farella, and then Keyara Wardley with her second try of the match to seal Canada’s first victory of the weekend-long tournament.
