Somehow, they did it again. Another miraculous fourth-quarter comeback from the Camosun Chargers gave them their first PACWEST medal in three years as they took down the Capilano Blues.
The Chargers took a 5-2 lead early in the first quarter before the Blues went on an unbelievable 14-1 run to take a 10-point lead. Camosun went on a 6-0 run to close the half, culminating with a Calvin Somers three-pointer to cut the lead to five at the buzzer.
Camosun was able to hang tough with the Blues through the middle 20 minutes of the period, breaking even with Capilano in the second quarter and coming close again in the third, trailing the Blues by 7 points as the final frame begun.
At this point, the thoughts of the players and of the crowd surely turned to Camosun’s incredible comeback victory against the Langara Falcons on Thursday night in the quarterfinal round. Down eleven points with five minutes left in regulation, the Chargers came all the way back to beat Langara 93-91. And as amazing as that victory was, Saturday’s game saw an even more impressive comeback, as Camosun absolutely dominated Capilano in the final quarter. The Chargers fans and bench alike were electric throughout the fourth quarter as Camosun continued to run up the score on the shellshocked Capilano team. The Blues simply couldn’t get anything to fall, scoring just 9 points on 3-of-17 shooting throughout the fourth, while the Chargers put up 31 points in the final quarter, scoring on 14 of their 19 attempts from the field.
Player of the Game honours went to Capilano’s Grady Huskisson with 6 points and 7 rebounds, and Camosun’s Shaquille Maharaj, who had 16 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists.
