The 6’3″ defenceman spent time in the VIJHL with Saanich before returning to the BCHL to play for Nanaimo and Prince George. Waterfield spent half a season in the NAHL and concluded his journeyman junior career in Manitoba as a member of the Winkler Flyers in 2012. He played 4 years of Canadian University hockey in the ACAC, where he graduated from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology with a degree in Personal Fitness Training
