April 7, 2024 Langford, BC ( ISN ) – In all sports, game one is game one. It holds about as much weight in the overall season as rarified air, but for two Victoria teams Saturday it was a small display of some great team and individual play, and a first step forward that can only bode well for both as the season progresses.
Saturday saw the all three Victoria Spartans and the Westshore Warriors teams go head to head at Goudy Field in Langford to formally open the 2024 spring minor football season. Both organizations flexed their proverbial muscle through the day’s battles with some lopsided victories as both put into motion what they have been practicing in all off season.
Despite some threatening rain clouds, the Atom division would open the day’s football entertainment. The Atom Spartans, although showing a glimmer of a running game, the Warriors would have their own strong running game and a stifling defense that would see the home team Warriors mark their first win of the season with a convincing 46-0 victory.
In the PeeWee game, the Spartans would exact a little payback for their junior team’s loss, taking a 26-0 halftime lead. The Warriors would prevent the doughnut with a Touch down n the second half, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Spartans would roll to a final 38-7 victory.
The day would finish with the hard hitting Junior Bantam teams clashing, in a battle for a first win of the season. The Warriors defence was in full force against the Spartans, not allowing the visitors to find their game rhythm, while a sucessfully persistent ground game would see the Warriors run away with the game, defeating the Spartans 56-0.
In an away day for the Saanich Wolverines, the junior bantam Wolverines would defeat the Naniamo Seahawks 38-0. Both the atom wolverines vs the Nanaimo Beast Mode, and the PeeWee Wolverines vs the Nanaimo Blitz scores were not available at press time.
The Cowichan Bulldogs were idle, enjoying a first week bye.
