The day opened with the second-place Atom Westshore Warriors being upended by the Wolverines. The Wolverines, sitting in 7th place at season’s end, were looking to be in for a rough ride Saturday, but weathered a potential Warrior storm, staying close at the half, only down 15-12. Minor league football fans dotted the field hillside to see a Wolverine offensive surge that catapulted Saanich over the Warriors in the second half, out-scoring Westshore 19-6 in the second half of play to roll onto a 31-21 victory. For the Wolverines, it was their third straight win to finish the season strong. The Warriors now enter the league semi-finals held on June 8th.

The Victoria Spartans PeeWee and Junior Bantam teams made the cross-town trip to Copley Park looking to close out strong, in what has been a difficult season for gold and black. Sitting in 6th and 7th place in the 2024 spring football standings respectfully, the Spartans would show glimmers of success throughout the season, but have been unable find consistency in play to crack the top echelon of the standings.

The PeeWee Spartans would show that glimmer against the Wolverines, testing the 1st place team keeping close to Saanich with a 8-6 halftime lead in favour of host team.  Saanich would pull up their socks and tighten down their cleats, to score 16 points in the second half to come away with a 24-6 win. With the Wolverines in a neck and neck race with the Nanaimo L.B. for first place with identical records, the win was a crucial one for Saanich in their quest to finish atop the standings.

The Junior Bantam match up was a tale of 2 teams. The Wolverines, undefeated at 7-0 this season, taking on the struggling 0-7 Spartans. Despite having a size advantage at the line over most teams, an inexperienced Spartans side could never find their offensive touch during the season, only able to find the endzone once this season.

The Wolverines would dominate in all facets of the final game of the regular season against the Spartans, easily defeating Victoria 40-0 to finish the season with a clean sheet, outscoring their opponents 262-46.

For the JB Wolverines, Head Coach Arun Dodd looks to have created, dare we say, a bit of a dynasty in Saanich. At Saturday’s game-end, the Wolverines have reportedly gone an amazing 39 games undefeated, including 2 consecutive BC Championship wins. Without a doubt, the team is hoping for a third BC title this season.

Congratulations to all in what has been a grueling, 9-week season !
